Donegal’s first legal distilling company in 175 years, Sliabh Liag Distillers is an international drinks business established by two ‘scatterlings’, James & Moira Doherty. They returned to the Sliabh Liag peninsula (pronounced “sleeve league”, meaning Mountain of Flagstones) to reclaim a distilling heritage, inheriting a rich legacy, that they believe will create opportunities for a generation and more. Their meitheal (work-gang or team) have set about creating a business that the whole community can be proud of.
They are called by Donegal and driven by a passion for soft-drinking hard spirits, that intensity of taste that only spirits can deliver and take inspiration from our terroir – the rugged landscape, tough climate and rich regional traditions.
They find joy in the contradictions portrayed in the Sliabh Liag Distillers drinks, especially that unexpected awe that hits when the essence of a profound moment is captured and revel in the international view of a returning emigrant. The carefully crafted super-premium brands will like its people before them take Donegal across the world.
The festival town of Ardara, where our distillery is based is home; the village of Carrick is where blending, bottling and administration operations function; and in the future – the development of the Bull Field, at the foot of the majestic Sliabh Liag.
Our team numbers more than 20, located in Donegal and around the world and they are at the heart of our business, led by our strong board.
