Smooth Silkie Takes It Up A Level
The award-winning and legendary Silkie blended Irish whiskey has undergone a few small yet significant changes. The blend of carefully selected malt and grain whiskeys will now be bottled at Sliabh Liag Distillers home, in Carrick, Co. Donegal. The move is also the catalyst for a change in ABV levels, moving to 46%, which removes the need for chill filtration and increases the character of the blend.
Named after the mythical seals that transform into irresistible maidens when ashore Donegal’s beaches, the whiskey is as smooth as its name suggests. Silkie is available from Amazon, Master of Malt and Whisky Exchange at an RRP of £32.99 for 70cl.
Created by James Doherty, a returning Donegal ‘scatterling’, Silkie is made by using a higher malt percentage than most blends, delivering a signature-soft mouth feel and silken, easy character.
On the nose, Silkie evokes brisk green apples opening to a more honeyed butteryness. On the palate, it suggests orange zest, digestive biscuits and stem ginger, all with a lovely softness. The rich, sweet taste provides a sublimely gentle finish.
Commenting on the move, James Doherty, Managing Director of SLD, said: “The move to bottling at our own distillery home is just the latest in a lot of positive developments for the business. We’re also pleased to increase the ABV as the quality of the blend can stand up to the higher bottling strength, and we know from feedback that it is something our drinkers will relish.”
